Day to Greenwich + National Maritime Museum – with optional attractions: Royal Observatory & Cutty Sark

Sunday 20th May 2018

Greenwich is where hemispheres meet and royal heritage combines with contemporary architecture. Choose from some of the following options when visiting, or simply enjoy your time in Greenwich exploring!   National Maritime Museum is free entry and you can add the following attractions:

Royal Observatory

Charles II founded the Royal Observatory in Greenwich Park in 1675 to improve navigation at sea and find out how to measure longitude. Longitude is your exact position east and west and without knowing how to measure it you can’t have any accurate idea of where you are.

This is a major problem, especially on long ocean journeys when you might not get any visual clues for weeks at a time. The key to measuring longitude was eventually discovered by John Harrison, who understood that it relied on super-accurate timekeeping at sea. You can see the clocks he developed at the Royal Observatory and stand astride the dividing point between east and west – the Meridian line.

There’s lots more to see as well, including a 4.5 billion year old meteorite and the Great Equatorial Telescope, the largest of it’s kind in the UK – it’s enormous!

Cutty Sark

You can get a real sensation of what it must have been like to go to sea in the great age of sail when you step aboard the fabulous Cutty Sark.

She’s the very last remaining Tea Clipper and, in her day, was one of the fastest ships on the all-important tea runs from China. If you stand at the prow you can imagine yourself thundering around the Cape of Good Hope on the way from Shanghai to London. During the middle years of the 19th century, clipper ships would compete with each other to see who could get the first crop of fresh tea back to the UK and Cutty Sark was one of them.

The ship has been in Greenwich since 1954 and went through a period of careful conservation between 2007 and 2012 during which a fire broke out on board. The fire looked shocking but didn’t do as much damage as had been feared because all the rigging and deck furniture had already been taken away for renewal. She has been raised three meters which means you can walk underneath her sparkling hull – you should definitely go and visit!

The King & I – London Palladium

Wednesday 8th August 2018

‘I DOUBT I’LL EVER SEE A BETTER PRODUCTION IN MY LIFETIME’

The Wall Street Journal

Tipped to be London’s theatrical event of 2018, the multi-award winning and critically acclaimed Lincoln Centre Theatre’s production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King And I comes to London's iconic Palladium in Spring 2018.

Starring the original Broadway stars; reprising her Tony Award-winning performance, Kelli O’Hara and Tony and Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe. Fresh from London's critical smash hit production of Oslo, director Bartlett Sher reunites the original creative team of Catherine Zuber (Tony Award winner for Best Costume), set designer Michael Yeargan, lighting designer Donald Holder, sound designer Scott Lehrer and choreography by Christopher Gattelli based on the original choreography by Jerome Robbins. Set in 1860’s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children. With a superior score of treasured songs including; Whistle a Happy Tune, Getting to Know You, and Shall We Dance, and featuring a company of over 50 world-class performers, The King and I is a testament to the lavish heritage of gloriously romantic musical theatre. Harry Potter Warner Bros. Studio Tour – Thurs 9th August

Thursday 9th August 2018 - Departure 8am (12 noon - 3pm  tour)

The Harry Potter film series made Leavesden its home for more than ten years. As the books were still being released while the films were being made, the production crew saved many of the iconic sets, props and costumes that were created especially for the films - just in case they were ever needed later on in the series.

Once filming wrapped on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 in 2010, the production crew were left with a treasure trove of thousands of intricate and beautifully-made artefacts, many of which wouldn't have been saved on a typical production.

The team behind Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter wanted to preserve and showcase these iconic props, costumes and sets so that Harry Potter fans could experience the magic of filmmaking first-hand. Many of the original cast and crew returned to reassemble the sets and record their memories from filming, and on 31st March 2012, the Studio Tour opened its doors.

Set adjacent to the working film studios where all eight Harry Potter films were made, the Studio Tour offers visitors the unique opportunity to explore two soundstages and a backlot filled with original sets, animatronic creatures and breathtaking special effects.

Kew’s 24th Orchid Festival

Thursday 21st February 2019

Thailand’s vibrant colours, culture, and magnificent plant life will be the centrepiece of Kew Gardens 2018 Orchids Festival in February.  Inside the tropical paradise of the Princess of Wales Conservatory, visitors to Kew’s 23rd annual Orchids Festival will get a chance to shake off the winter blues and get creative through a host of exciting new events and activities designed to appeal to all ages.

Colourful floral displays will welcome visitors as they enter the tropical glasshouse and wander through a magnificently colourful Vanda tunnel, with three arches delicately covered with hanging orchids. Beautifully handcrafted floating Thai umbrellas will lead to an exquisite Bang Pa-In-inspired orchid palace. A traditional Thai market boat and rice paddy are central to this year’s water display, representing a typical bucolic scene, complete with a special Thai cart on loan from the Royal Thai Embassy in London.

As well as the stunning visual displays, visitors will be immersed in the sounds of Thailand’s everyday hustle and bustle via four different specially commissioned soundscapes playing inside the glasshouse. From the grinding of ingredients and the sizzling of spices in a pan, to the tranquil sounds of an exotic spa and the regal stirrings of a palace, all aspects of Thailand’s culture are captured throughout the diverse soundtracks.

Thailand is home to 1,100 species of orchid. Botanists have been naming and describing orchids for more than 250 years and Kew is a world leader in this field.  Last year alone, 600 new species were discovered worldwide, including three from Thailand. Many orchids have important medicinal properties as well as being revered globally for their delicate beauty.

Totem – Cirque Du Soleil (Royal Albert Hall)

Sunday 24th February 2019  (Matinee)

Recognised over the world, Cirque du Soleil has constantly sought to evoke imagination, invoke senses and provoke emotions. Discover the highly creative and artistic shows from Cirque du Soleil.

TOTEM follows the human species from original amphibian state to ultimate desire to fly.

The characters evolve on a stage, evoking a giant turtle, the symbol of origin for many ancient civilizations. TOTEM explores the ties that bind Man to other species, his dreams and his infinite potential.

Featuring:

Fixed Trapeze Duo

Like two lovebirds, a young man and woman tease, play and sulk in an innocent game of seduction and eventually intertwine their bodies in a light-hearted vertical dance of fresh, unusual movements and lifts.

American Dance

As the drum keeps time, a young Amerindian dancer evokes myths, legends and the everlasting circle of life.

Roller Skates

In a scene that evokes a wedding ceremony, a pair of roller skaters spins and whirls at heart-stopping speeds atop a tiny platform— just 1.8 metres in diameter—shaped like a drum.

Sparks of Life

Playful amphibians and fish burst into life, launching themselves into the air from a power track, springing from one bar to the next.

London Postal Museum & Lunch

Thursday 28th February 2019

This day out gives you entrance to the newly opened Postal Museum in London which includes a two course lunch before the tour.

The museum’s galleries will take you on a journey through five-centuries of world-class curiosities, providing a different, previously unseen view on some of the world’s most significant historical events, and an insight into the quirky beginnings of the earliest social network.

Once you have explored the museum, your ticket will then grant you access to a subterranean world that – up until now – remained hidden from public view.

Descend into the old engineering depot of Mail Rail – the one-hundred-year old little-known Post Office railway – and board a miniature train designed to transport people through its narrow tunnels for the first time. The train ride will pass through and stop at the original Mount Pleasant station platforms 70 feet underground, where an impressive audio visual display will take riders back in time, giving an insight into the heyday of the railway.
