Diana: Her Fashion Story – 20 years on at Kensington Palace (27th Jan) – SOLD OUT

Saturday 27th January 2018

Celebrate the life of Princess Diana at Kensington Palace in 2018. Few people have made such an impact on the world as Diana, Princess of Wales.

2017 will mark the 20th anniversary of her death in 1997, and Historic Royal Palaces will celebrate her life with a new exhibition and commemorative garden, opening at Kensington Palace in 2017.

Kensington Palace was a place of unique significance in the life of Diana, Princess of Wales. As well as being her home from 1981, she also regularly hosted receptions for her many charities in the State Apartments and Orangery. Alongside the new exhibition and garden will run a programme of talks and events exploring Princess Diana’s enduring legacy.

‘Diana: Her Fashion Story’ will trace the evolution of the Princess’s style, from the demure, romantic outfits of her first public appearances, to the glamour, elegance and confidence of her later life. From her earliest royal engagements, everything Diana wore was closely scrutinised, and the exhibition will explore how she navigated her unique position in the public eye: learning to use her image to engage and inspire people, and to champion the causes she cared about.

Discover exquisite and celebrated outfits from throughout the Princess’s public life. The exhibition will bring together an extraordinary collection of garments, ranging from the glamorous evening gowns worn on engagements in the 1980s, to the chic Catherine Walker suits that made up Diana’s ‘working wardrobe’ in the 1990s. The Princess’s relationship with her favourite designers will be explored through a display of some of their original fashion sketches, created for her during the design process.

Exhibition highlights will include the pale pink Emanuel blouse worn for Diana’s engagement portrait by Lord Snowdon in 1981, and Victor Edelstein’s iconic ink blue velvet gown, famously worn at the White House when the Princess danced with John Travolta. A blue tartan Emanuel suit, worn for an official visit to Venice in the 1980s, will go on display in public for the first time. The suit, a rare survival of the Princess’s daywear, was only recently rediscovered and acquired by Historic Royal Palaces – the charity responsible for Kensington Palace – at auction.

Abba ‘Super Troupers’ Exhibition – Southbank – with optional London Eye – Sat 10th Feb 2018

Saturday 10th February 2018

Departure Time: 8am

Yep, that’s right. We’re getting set to go ‘Head Over Heels’ for all things ABBA as we say ‘Thank You For the Music’ in an exhibition that will have you clamouring to hand over your ‘Money, Money, Money’. OK, we’ll stop the puns and focus instead on the details of what’s set to be a truly unique experience, pitching the Swedish supergroup against the news and social events of 1970s Britain.

With Entertainment Exhibitions International AB, and in association with ABBA The Museum in Stockholm we’re bringing the world of the chart-topping Swedish pop sensation to life in a brand new exhibition. The immersive experience will chart the group’s music, lyrics, creative process, and irrefutable influence as one of the most iconic pop bands of the modern age.

We are thrilled to be supporting the new exhibition ABBA: Super Troupers in London, especially since ABBA have always been very appreciative of the love and support shown to us by our fans in the UK.
FRIDA LYNGSTAD, ABBA

ABBA: Super Troupers is a guided exhibition which goes beyond the surface of the group to transport you on a journey through previously unseen archive material including ABBA’s original costumes, handwritten notes and sketches, personal photographs, music and instruments. It will also feature album artwork, photography and film by notable collaborators such as film director Lasse Hallström.

It’s particularly interesting that Southbank Centre is placing our songs in the temporal context in which they were created. What happened in those years in the UK and in the world? One thing is for certain – it seems unbelievably long ago!
BJÖRN ULVAEUS, ABBA

For the first time, objects from ABBA The Museum and private archives will be brought together in the UK, charting the success of Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, from their individual careers to that Eurovision Song Contest win and their subsequent international stardom.

We’re very pleased to take this opportunity to shed new light on these cultural icons, and explore why they remain so enduring in their appeal across the globe.
JUDE KELLY CBE, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, SOUTHBANK CENTRE”

Dinosaurs In The Wild at O2

17th February 2018   (Half term trip)

8am Departure

The producers of Dinosaurs in the Wild have revealed that the new multi million-pound hit attraction will be making its way to London from February 2018. After a successful launch at Birmingham’s NEC earlier this year, prior to moving on to Manchester’s Event City this October, the show’s unique time machine will be set up on Greenwich Peninsula in London and will take families back an astonishing 67 million years to encounter amazing creatures like Tyrannosaurus Rex roaming the wild.

Londoners will be immersed in an unforgettable experience that, for the very first time, will make them feel as though they are actually there – amongst the dinosaurs, in their world, at their time. Dinosaur tourists are whisked by time machine to join scientists at an extraordinary research station – TimeBase 67 – which has been built on the Late Cretaceous Plains 67 million years ago.

On the ultimate voyage of discovery, they drive with their guides through lumbering herds of dangerous dinosaurs, watch a dinosaur autopsy, witness hatchlings emerging from eggs, plunge their hands into dinosaur poo, and visit a lookout, with panoramic views of the teeming prehistoric life in every direction..

This unique and exhilarating blend of live-action theatre, theme park fun and the very latest palaeontological knowledge will transport you back an astonishing 67 million years by time machine to encounter living dinosaurs as they’ve never been seen before.

Cutting-edge audiovisual effects and dramatic storytelling will immerse you in unforgettable experiences that, for the very first time, will make you feel as though you’re actually there – amongst dinosaurs, the most awe-inspiring animals ever to have roamed the Earth, in their world, at their time.

Harry Potter Warner Bros. Studio Tour – Tues 3rd April 2018

Tuesday 3rd April 2018 – Departure 7am (11am – 2pm  tour)

The Harry Potter film series made Leavesden its home for more than ten years. As the books were still being released while the films were being made, the production crew saved many of the iconic sets, props and costumes that were created especially for the films – just in case they were ever needed later on in the series.

Once filming wrapped on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 in 2010, the production crew were left with a treasure trove of thousands of intricate and beautifully-made artefacts, many of which wouldn’t have been saved on a typical production.

The team behind Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter wanted to preserve and showcase these iconic props, costumes and sets so that Harry Potter fans could experience the magic of filmmaking first-hand. Many of the original cast and crew returned to reassemble the sets and record their memories from filming, and on 31st March 2012, the Studio Tour opened its doors.

Set adjacent to the working film studios where all eight Harry Potter films were made, the Studio Tour offers visitors the unique opportunity to explore two soundstages and a backlot filled with original sets, animatronic creatures and breathtaking special effects.

Downton Abbey – Highclere Castle April 2018

Sunday 15th April 2018

Find out more about the castle and your visit by clicking here.

Highclere Castle is not only a beautiful building, but a warm and welcoming home. Playing host to family and friends, but also to events and celebrations with visitors and guests from around the world.

We are delighted to welcome you to explore the history of the Castle, the illuminating Egyptian Exhibition narrating the discovery of the Tomb of Tutankhamun, and the peace and tranquillity of the surrounding gardens and grounds.

Many of the rooms and vistas will be familiar to viewers of ‘Downton Abbey’ – both the Drawing Room and Dining Room forming the backdrop to the dryly withering put-downs delivered by Maggie Smith, as the Dowager Countess to some poor unfortunate relation. The distinctive gardens and park designed by Capability Brown, offer interest and enjoyment throughout the year and gratifying growth and change, as the seasons turn.

Diana: Her Fashion Story – 20 years on at Kensington Palace (3rd May)

Thursday 3rd May 2018

Celebrate the life of Princess Diana at Kensington Palace in 2018. Few people have made such an impact on the world as Diana, Princess of Wales.

2017 marked the 20th anniversary of her death in 1997, and Historic Royal Palaces are celebrating her life with a new exhibition and commemorative garden, at Kensington Palace.

‘Diana: Her Fashion Story’ traces the evolution of the Princess’s style, from the demure, romantic outfits of her first public appearances, to the glamour, elegance and confidence of her later life.

Exhibition highlights include the pale pink Emanuel blouse worn for Diana’s engagement portrait by Lord Snowdon in 1981, and Victor Edelstein’s iconic ink blue velvet gown, famously worn at the White House when the Princess danced with John Travolta.

Planet Earth II Live In Concert

Royal Albert Hall – BBC Concert Orchestra

Sunday 13th May 2018

Departure Time: 12 noon (Concert 6pm)

Celebrate the greatest treasures of our planet in a thrilling, unique way

Planet Earth II Live in Concert brings us closer to the spellbinding animals, landscapes and wildlife dramas on our planet than ever before.

This musical and visual concert features breath-taking footage from the highly acclaimed BBCseries, shown on big screens, accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Jessica Cottis, playing the remarkable music by Jacob Shea, Jasha Klebe and the Academy Award winner Hans Zimmer, and hosted from the stage by Mike Gunton, Creative Director of the Natural History Unit and Executive Producer of Planet Earth II.

In this extraordinary musical safari we rub shoulders with our acrobatic primate cousins in the steaming jungles of Madagascar, race alongside fearsome hunting lions in the remote sandy deserts of Namibia, face stormy Antarctic seas with a family of penguins and feel the raw tension as a baby iguana tries to escape the clutches of deadly racer snakes. We will tap our toes along with dancing grizzly bears and be swept away by the bravery of a mother snow leopard.

‘Planet Earth II may be the most amazing thing I’ve ever been involved in … some of the greatest action scenes ever put on film … some of the most emotional, epic, fragile scenes I’ve ever witnessed. Film making at its absolute peak.’
Hans Zimmer

The Planet Earth II television series is a BBC Studios Natural History Unit production, co-produced with BBC America, ZDF, Tencent and France Télèvisions

We have top seats in row 3 and back in the central arena!

Day to Greenwich + National Maritime Museum – with optional attractions: Royal Observatory & Cutty Sark

Sunday 20th May 2018

Departing Taverham at 8am

Greenwich is where hemispheres meet and royal heritage combines with contemporary architecture. Choose from some of the following options when visiting, or simply enjoy your time in Greenwich exploring!   National Maritime Museum is free entry and you can add the following attractions:

Royal Observatory

Charles II founded the Royal Observatory in Greenwich Park in 1675 to improve navigation at sea and find out how to measure longitude. Longitude is your exact position east and west and without knowing how to measure it you can’t have any accurate idea of where you are.

This is a major problem, especially on long ocean journeys when you might not get any visual clues for weeks at a time. The key to measuring longitude was eventually discovered by John Harrison, who understood that it relied on super-accurate timekeeping at sea. You can see the clocks he developed at the Royal Observatory and stand astride the dividing point between east and west – the Meridian line.

There’s lots more to see as well, including a 4.5 billion year old meteorite and the Great Equatorial Telescope, the largest of it’s kind in the UK – it’s enormous!

Cutty Sark

You can get a real sensation of what it must have been like to go to sea in the great age of sail when you step aboard the fabulous Cutty Sark.

She’s the very last remaining Tea Clipper and, in her day, was one of the fastest ships on the all-important tea runs from China. If you stand at the prow you can imagine yourself thundering around the Cape of Good Hope on the way from Shanghai to London. During the middle years of the 19th century, clipper ships would compete with each other to see who could get the first crop of fresh tea back to the UK and Cutty Sark was one of them.

The ship has been in Greenwich since 1954 and went through a period of careful conservation between 2007 and 2012 during which a fire broke out on board. The fire looked shocking but didn’t do as much damage as had been feared because all the rigging and deck furniture had already been taken away for renewal. She has been raised three meters which means you can walk underneath her sparkling hull – you should definitely go and visit!

Departure 8am from Taverham – Show 14.30hrs

New London Theatre (Covent Garden)

Andrew Lloyd Webber, the man who brought rock and romance to Broadway, is back with a new heart-stirring hit. SCHOOL OF ROCK is a New York Times Critics’ Pick and “AN INSPIRING JOLT OF ENERGY, JOY AND MAD SKILLZ!” (Entertainment Weekly ). Reuters raves ”ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER HAS BROADWAY ROCKING AGAIN!”

Based on the hit film, this hilarious new musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight-A students into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. While teaching these pint-sized prodigies what it means to truly rock, Dewey falls for the school’s beautiful, but uptight headmistress, helping her rediscover the wild child within. (The New York Times says, “BE WARNED! There’s a love story in this one.”)

Featuring 14 new songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber and all the original songs from the movie, this high-octane smash delivers face-melting guitar riffs and touching romance in equally awesome doses! The Daily News cheers, ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER “AWAKENS THE EMPOWERING MESSAGE OF ROCK!” and Time Out New York raves, “SCHOOL’s in – FOREVER!”

Motown the Musical! 7th June 2018

Thursday 7th June 2018

MOTOWN THE MUSICAL follows the legendary career of Berry Gordy and the creation of his musical empire, Motown Records. The story begins in 1983, on the evening of the 25th anniversary celebration of Motown, and Berry Gordy is looking back on his career. Inspired by his childhood hero, black American boxer Joe Louis, the young Berry dreams big, hoping one day to make people as happy and proud. After a few years on Detroit’s automobile assembly line he sets his sights on bringing a socially charged, racially divided country together with music. With an $800 loan from his family, Berry founds a music making factory. Motown is born!

Motown

Berry signs a series of groundbreaking artists including Diana Ross and the Supremes, Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations and more. But with the Vietnam War looming and America at a cultural turning point, Berry realises the time has come to push for something bigger than he ever dreamed of: to make music that could get the whole world moving to the same beat.

MOTOWN THE MUSICAL tells the thrilling tale of the man who broke barriers and fought against the odds to define the sound of a generation – complete with the ups and downs of the personal relationships, the professional struggles, and – of course – the music that made history. Discover the story behind the beat that changed minds, touched lives and took the world by storm. MOTOWN THE MUSICAL shows how one label and its roster of legendary artists created the soundtrack that transformed America and gave the world a new musical vocabulary – the Motown Sound. With over 40 classic songs such as “My Girl”, “Stop! In The Name of Love”, “Dancing in the Street”, “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, this explosive event is the next chapter of Motown’s incredible history – and an experience you’ll never forget.

Tickets are top stall seats with face value of £69.50 but special rate of £65 including coach travel.

Highclere House – Downton Abbey – July 2018

Thursday 19th July 2018

Note from Newmarket:

Children:

‘As Newmarket Nights are our Friday evening racing plus music events with the artist taking to the stage at any time from 8pm, our recommendation is that Newmarket Nights are not suitable for children under 16.

Whilst we recommend that these events are not suitable for children under 16, if you do wish to bring them as part of your party, at your discretion, they can attend as long as they possess a valid ticket to gain entry and there is a responsible adult of 18 and above to every two children under 16.

We take every precaution to try and ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time at all of our events. If you do decide to bring a child under 16, we would suggest against taking them into the most densely crowded areas, which includes the large area in front of the stage. ‘

Chartwell was the much-loved Churchill family home from 1922 and the place from which Sir Winston drew inspiration until the end of his life.

The rooms remain much as they were when he lived here, with pictures, books and personal mementoes evoking the career and wide-ranging interests of a great statesman, writer, painter and family man. Additionally, every winter they put on a new temporary exhibition to explore Churchill in more detail and draw items out of storage.

The hillside gardens reflect Sir Winston’s love of the landscape and nature. They include the lakes he created, the kitchen garden and the Marycot, a playhouse designed for his youngest daughter Mary.

Beyond the gardens there is an expanse of woodland with looped trails and natural play areas. There’s den building, a Canadian camp and opportunities to stretch your legs.

7 Night Scottish Highlands & Islands Cruise with Fred Olsen

7- Night Scottish Highlands & Islands Cruise

Fred Olsen – Balmoral – inc. Coach transfer to Newcastle

Sunday 29th July 2018

Prices from £1049 pp including coach transfer

Download information sheet here

Appreciate the unspoilt landscapes of the breathtaking Highlands and discover the highlights of three beautiful islands as Balmoral guides you to some of Scotland’s hardest-to-reach, yet most rewarding destinations.

Nestled within gorgeous Highland countryside and fronted by the calm waters of Cromarth Firth, Invergordon will offer you your first glimpse of Scotland’s renowned beauty. After enjoying the views from deck as you sail into port, go ashore for the chance to tour to the centuries-old castles of Dunrobin or Cawdor; or perhaps go in search of the legendary Loch Ness Monster. The first of three remote islands on your itinerary will then await your exploration. Kirkwall – the capital of the Orkneys – is your gateway to taking in the remarkably well-preserved, 5,000-year-old Neolithic structures of Skara Brae and the ancient stone circles of Stenness and Brodgar. Alternatively you could embark on a scenic exploration of the Orkneys’ most spectacular coastal trails and encounter wonderful wildlife such as razorbills and puffins, stunning vistas and a host of historic sites.

A mesmerising day of scenic cruising follows your call into Kirkwall, an undoubted highlight of this captivating seven night sailing. Discover the beauty of Tobermory Bay, sheltered by steep cliffs and hills; see the historic 13th century Duart Castle as you sail the still waters of the Sound of Mull; and take in the picturesque scenery of the Firth of Lorn. Cruising close to the fascinating basalt columns of Fingal’s Cave will be an unforgettable experience too. Balmoral will then stop at Stornoway, from where you can tour to the very north of the Isle of Lewis to admire the incredible scenery and spot a few of the island’s most historic landmarks such as the Church of St Moluag and the Butt of Lewis Lighthouse. Finally it’s on to the enchanting Shetlands, where some of Scotland’s most spectacular coastal scenery can be seen on a tour to Northmavine from Lerwick.

Stanta – Battle Training Ground – Thetford

Wednesday 22nd August 2018

Many will have see the red & white ‘STANTA’ signs near Thetford.  But what is it…….??

Stanford Training Area (STANTA), originally known as Stanford Battle Area, is a British Army training area situated in the English county of Norfolk. The area is approximately 30,000 acres (120 km2) in size; it is some 7 miles (11 km) north of the town of Thetford and 25 miles (40 km) south-west of the city of Norwich. The site is run by the Operational Training and Advisory Group (OPTAG).

The area was originally established in 1942 when a battle training area was required and a ‘Nazi village’ established. Military exercises were already known in the area; tanks had deployed to Thetford in the First World War. The complete takeover involved the evacuation of the villages of Buckenham Tofts, Langford, Stanford, Sturston, Tottington and West Tofts.

The area was used during the run-up to the D-Day invasion and since then has hosted many exercises. A regular visitor is 16 Air Assault Brigade who hold their annual Gryphon exercises there. It is also used by cadets to complete Fieldcraft exercises.

In 2009 a 12.5-acre (51,000 m2) village designed to replicate its Afghan equivalent, was added to the Battle Area for the training of troops deployed in support of the War in Afghanistan. The site, built at a cost of £14 million, is state of the art and manned by Afghan nationals, ex-Gurkha soldiers and amputee actors, who simulate the Afghan National Army, locals and wounded soldiers.  The village includes houses, a market and a mosque. It also features a system that pumps out smells like rotten meat and sewage.  Further details can be seen by pasting the following link.

Birmingham International Tattoo / Frankfurt Christmas Market

Sunday 25th November 2018

The Tattoo

Over 1,000 performers will line up at Britain’s biggest indoor tattoo including  International marching bands, led by the Band of the Royal Air Force, from Sweden, France, Hungary, Italy, and from our own British forces, will join massed Scottish pipe bands, field gun teams, standard bearers and dog display teams.

Complementing the music of the massed bands will be the thrills of the exciting displays including the RMRNC Inter-Service Field Gun Competition, featuring the Royal Navy, Army and RAF, which will prove how both sheer strength and agility are needed to control the heavy guns as they race each other. Also taking part will be the popular dog display teams who will demonstrate canine agility as they also race each other in the arena.

The Market
