Helmingham Hall (Stowmarket) – Spring Plant Fair & Artisan Market – Sunday 30th May 2021 – Coach trip from Norwich

Sunday 30th May 2021

Join us for our 2021 Plant Heritage Plant Fair & Artisan Market which is set to be bigger and better than ever before! With specialist nurseries, artisan products, conservation zone, entertainment and children’s activities, we’ll have something for every taste and age. Plant Heritage is a charity dedicated to the conservation of rare garden plants.

Garden Zone
Featuring nurseries from near and far with lots of unusual and popular plants for sale, including trees, ferns, grasses, alpines and much more. We’ll have local National Plant Collections and the Suffolk Plant Heritage propagation group on-site, selling rare plants which are not easily found elsewhere. We’ll also be selling a wide range of garden accessories; from antique garden tools to modern sculpture and garden furniture.

Conservation Zone
This year we’re proud to welcome a number of Garden Societies, Local and National Charities to our Plant Heritage Spring Fair. They’ll be on hand during the day to give specialist advice about maintaining plants, gardens and different types of wildlife.

800 Free Plants
We’ll be giving away 800 plants to the first 800 visitors to claim them. Giving a plant away is the best form of conservation. This years plant is Erigeron glaucus ‘Sennen’. Erigeron is a large genus of daisy-like plants. The species E. glaucus is native to the coastline of West Coast USA, where it grows on beaches, dunes and coastal bluffs. It is moderately low growing with branching stems, and produces rounded spoon-shaped leaves. The cultivar ‘Sennen’ we assume has occurred from Sennen Cove in Cornwall.

Garden Marquee
The Garden Marquee will host a wide range of workshops throughout the day, including lots of insider tip and tricks. Our Plant Doctors will also be available to offer advice on any gardening topic, identifying your mystery plants and plant problems.

Artisan Market
A wide range of exhibitors offering everything from artisan foods and handmade soaps to vintage French collectables and pottery. As well as the wonderful stallholders, we have fantastic entertainment including Chocks Away vintage dancers, live music, birds of prey and children’s activities. There will also be lots of lovely local food and drink, making the fair an ideal day out for gardening clubs, families and similar groups – coaches are very welcome.

Situated in front of the magnificent moated Helmingham Hall, visitors to the plant sale can also enjoy Helmingham Hall’s Grade 1 listed gardens, including dramatic borders, knot and herb gardens, nineteenth-century parterre, ancient deer park and Victorian kitchen garden.

Kew Gardens & Kew Palace – Tuesday 8th June 2021 – Coach trip from Norwich

Tuesday 8th June 2021

Depart Taverham: 8am

Located in 300 acres of beautiful landscape Kew Gardens sits beside the river Thames between Richmond and Kew in south-west London. The Gardens are a World Heritage Site with six magnificent glasshouses, and are home to a remarkable collection of plants from all over the world including over 14,000 trees. Kew Gardens is a wonderful day out for all. If you haven't been to Kew before, don't miss the 19th-century Palm House, the tropical atmosphere of the Princess of Wales Conservatory, a walk to the iconic pagoda, and a climb up for a birds-eye view at the new Xstrata Treetop Walkway.

Beautiful as the 17th century Dutch-gabled country house along the River Thames is, it could hardly be called palatial, particularly by royal standards, and yet it is one of London's most notable historic royal palaces. No small feat considering Kew Palace, which is set within the grounds of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew. Kew Palace earned its place in history by being exactly the opposite - retiring, modest and comfortable. In other words, it was the perfect royal retreat. Most famously, it served as just that for the prodigious family of King George III. First opened to the public by Queen Victoria in 1899, the palace was closed from 1996 to 2006 while undergoing £6.6 million of careful restoration and conservation. The money and effort have transformed Kew Palace from "a gaudy 1960s interpretation of the Georgian era" into a historically accurate study of the daily life and everyday domesticities of the palace and the royals who lived within it.

The Hive is a unique structure, inspired by scientific research into the health of bees. Designed by UK based artist Wolfgang Buttress, it was originally created as the centrepiece of the UK Pavilion at the 2015 Milan Expo. The installation is made from thousands of pieces of aluminium which create a lattice effect and is fitted with hundreds of LED lights that glow and fade as a unique soundtrack hums and buzzes around you.

These multi-sensory elements of the Hive are in fact responding to the real-time activity of bees in a beehive behind the scenes at Kew. The sound and light intensity within the space changes as the energy levels in the real beehive surge, giving visitors an insight into life inside a bee colony.

Tickets included in the price shown allow entry to all buildings and attractions within the Gardens.

North Norfolk Coast & East Ruston Old Vicarage Gardens – Thursday 10th June 2021 – Coach trip from Norwich

Thursday 10th June 2021

Enjoy a mystery tour around the North & East Norfolk coast with stops en-route.  We then arrive at the beautiful East Ruston Old Vicarage Gardens & Tea Room for the afternoon jointly owned of course by Alan Gray of BBC Radio Norfolk's Garden Party programme.

''When we first came here there was no garden whatsoever, it was a blank canvas. This was no bad thing because it afforded us the opportunity to vent our creativity. Each separate garden was designed entirely by ourselves as were the various buildings. We have used no outside help.

One of our great joys is to see the pleasure that the garden can bring to many of the visitors and that everybody seems to find some part of it that is special to them. Throughout the garden you will see many rare and unusual plants growing. We endeavour to propagate from these in small numbers so that they may be purchased from the plant sales area. Many of these are difficult or slow to increase, hence their rarity, so if you see a plant growing in the garden that you would like do ask, we may have some tucked away for you to purchase as a souvenir of your time spent here.

Our garden lies 1½ miles from the North Sea in an exposed prairie landscape containing large arable fields. Many of the wildlife habitats for birds and mammals had long been swept away. We have endeavoured throughout the garden to replace some of these by the planting of mixed hedgerows, banks, wildflower areas and ponds.

The soil here is of excellent quality being a light sandy loam with a neutral pH. Due to the maritime influence the garden suffers less in the way of serious frost damage and we have planted large shelter belts of Pinus radiata, the Monterey Pine, Alnus cordata, the Italian Alder, Holm Oak and Eucalyptus. This enhances the garden’s unique microclimate which enables us to grow such a huge range of plants.''

Rutland Water Cream Tea Cruise & Barnsdale Gardens (Oakham) – Friday 16th July 2021 – Coach trip from Norwich

Come with us to Rutland Water as we enjoy a morning cream tea aboard the Rutland Belle and a 45 minute cruise on Rutland Water. This 45-minute, morning cruise is served with a large freshly baked fruit scone with strawberry jam, luxury clotted cream, tea & coffee.

Rutland Belle plies from Whitwell on the North Shore and calls in at Normanton on the South Shore. Visitors can enjoy the scenery from the water, amidst the sailors, anglers and waterbirds, whilst listening to commentary highlighting points of interest.

Rutland Water is a large, horseshoe-shaped reservoir set within three thousand acres of beautiful countryside in the East Midlands region of England. Anglian Water owns and administers the reservoir, and around its twenty-five mile perimeter there are four leisure areas. Three are on the north shore at Barnsdale, Whitwell and Sykes Lane.

We then travel a short distance to spend the afternoon at Barnsdale Gardens, formerly the gardens of BBC Gardener’s World presenter Geoff Hamilton.  Geoff joined the team in 1979 and filming was done at the original Barnsdale.  Geoff found that there was little room to experiment and so he began to look for a suitable alternative. In 1983, he found it. Just one mile away, a Victorian farmhouse with over 5 acres of land - 'Barnsdale' was born!

Two years later Gardeners' World was well established in its new home with Geoff's down to earth style making him a hit with the viewers. It was here that he continued to present the show, developing the individual garden designs, experimenting with plants, themes and ideas to inspire the nation to get outside and have a go. And it was here that he earned the reputation of being the ‘People’s Gardener’ – and this spirit lives on today at Barnsdale Gardens.  Cafe available for lunch and afternoon refreshments.
