Constable Country & Lavenham – Wednesday 2nd June 2021

Wednesday 2nd June 2021

Join us on this popular trip on the Suffolk & Essex border as we call in at Lavenham  for a short while before heading to Dedham, Constables birth place where you will have time for a spot of lunch.  After lunch we head to Flatford Mill, scene of some of Constables most famous paintings.  If you feel fit you may want to walk across the footpaths to the Mill!

A visit to Flatford Mill in Flatford, East Bergholt, makes for a relaxing day out. The scene has been immortalised by John Constable in his painting of The Haywain, and the Mill is still recognisable. Attached to the Mill, which is a Grade 1-listed watermill originally built in 1733, is a 17th-Century miller’s cottage which is also Grade I listed. The Watermill is located in the centre of Dedham Vale, a wonderfully English village close to the border with Essex. This is part of the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty so take your time to savour the area. The Mill was once owned by Constable’s father and Constable made both the Mill and the surrounding area the subjects of many of his works of art, which are now world famous.

North Norfolk Coast & East Ruston Old Vicarage Gardens – Thursday 10th June 2021 – Coach trip from Norwich

Thursday 10th June 2021

Enjoy a mystery tour around the North & East Norfolk coast with stops en-route.  We then arrive at the beautiful East Ruston Old Vicarage Gardens & Tea Room for the afternoon jointly owned of course by Alan Gray of BBC Radio Norfolk's Garden Party programme.

''When we first came here there was no garden whatsoever, it was a blank canvas. This was no bad thing because it afforded us the opportunity to vent our creativity. Each separate garden was designed entirely by ourselves as were the various buildings. We have used no outside help.

One of our great joys is to see the pleasure that the garden can bring to many of the visitors and that everybody seems to find some part of it that is special to them. Throughout the garden you will see many rare and unusual plants growing. We endeavour to propagate from these in small numbers so that they may be purchased from the plant sales area. Many of these are difficult or slow to increase, hence their rarity, so if you see a plant growing in the garden that you would like do ask, we may have some tucked away for you to purchase as a souvenir of your time spent here.

Our garden lies 1½ miles from the North Sea in an exposed prairie landscape containing large arable fields. Many of the wildlife habitats for birds and mammals had long been swept away. We have endeavoured throughout the garden to replace some of these by the planting of mixed hedgerows, banks, wildflower areas and ponds.

The soil here is of excellent quality being a light sandy loam with a neutral pH. Due to the maritime influence the garden suffers less in the way of serious frost damage and we have planted large shelter belts of Pinus radiata, the Monterey Pine, Alnus cordata, the Italian Alder, Holm Oak and Eucalyptus. This enhances the garden’s unique microclimate which enables us to grow such a huge range of plants.''

Vintage Essex – A Full Board Day Out! with Lunch & Afternoon Tea – Thursday 1st July 2021 – Coach trip from Norwich

Vintage Essex

Our Vintage Essex day is for those who like to see a lot without walking too far!

We arrive in Thaxted, Queen of Essex at 10.30am for morning refreshments in an old coaching inn. Betjeman said Thaxted was about as good as it gets.

We'll visit the old wool church where English composer Gustav Holst played the organ and the vicar flew the Red Flag from the tower. Who's for a few verses of Holst's hymn Thaxted, better known as I Vow To Thee My Country? From the church we weave past black and white striped Tudor houses and jolly colour-washed homes from the mediaeval to the Georgian period to the beautifully wonky old Guildhall.

From high in the coach we'll take in the gently rolling landscapes of rural Essex and the chocolate box village of Finchingfield as we head south to the little known Essex Rodings. Eight villages full of old thatched cottages, timber-framed manor houses and farmhouses form the largest group in the country to share a common name. The Rodings name comes from the Anglo-Saxon Hrodingas who sailed up the River Thames 1500 years ago, turned right at Barking Creek and kept going until they found this remote and fertile landscape.

A ploughman's lunch is ready for us at the Lodge Garage in High Easter, served to you by ladies who dress up to get into the vintage spirit. We are surrounded by the vintage vehicle collection and old coaching ephemera collection of the Lodge Family have just marked their centenary in the coaching business.

It's a lovely afternoon with time to enjoy the collection of old coaching and bus ephemera and rides out in immaculately restored 1940s and 1950s coaches that have starred in Only Fools spin off Rock & Chips and blockbuster series The Crown. We finish the day with tea & cake, which is also included in the cost.

  • Coach travel to Thaxted
  • Morning Coffee with Biscuits
  • Ploughman's Lunch with hot drink
  • Afternoon tea with cake

The Essex Highlands – Tour, Morning Coffee and Lunch – Wednesday 1st Sept 2021 – Coach trip from Norwich

The Essex Highlands - Morning Coffee & Lunch in an Old English Thatched Pub

(With a Guided Tour That Proves Essex is Far From Flat!)

With morning coffee and lunch included at a thatched pub in a picture postcard village, a coach tour of the little known Essex Highlands in the Hundred of Uttlesford and time for tea and a wander in beautiful Saffron Walden, this is an ideal day to come back out again and enjoy a day together.

We arrive in Arkesden at 10.30am to meet our entertaining and helpful Blue Badge Tour Guide for morning refreshments. Arkesden is hidden in rolling countryside off the M11 between Junctions 8 and 9. About 10 miles South of Duxford or North of Birchanger.

Our morning coach tour will forever dispel the notion of Essex as a flat county and show you just how beautiful this part of Essex is. In fact we slip in and out of three counties during our circular tour and from high in the coach you’ll get lovely views and there are plenty of interesting stories to create a thoroughly entertaining morning. Oh how we've missed these country drives!

Then it's back in Arkesden “the gem of the Essex Highlands” and our thatched pub for a tasty steak pie lunch. Pre-booked vegetarian and gluten free options are available. We leave it to individuals to decide if they'd like to treat themselves to a dessert on the day. The landlord is not daft - he sends his staff out with an old fashioned sweet trolley. groaning with tempting things. Just try and resist!

After lunch there's time to wander over to see the brightly painted effigies in the old church before we drive past stately Audley End on our way to Saffron Walden named for the saffron crocus once grown in the surrounding fields. You can join the Guide for a gentle town trail before finishing a spot to settle for tea. We'll be heading home at 4.30pm.

Including:

  • Morning Coffee & Biscuits
  • One course steak pie lunch or veg option
  • Blue Badge Tour Guide throughout
