Norfolk Day Out with Thursford Collection – Monday 27th April 2020 – Coach Travel from Norwich

Enjoy a day out in Norfolk including the wonderful Thursford Collection!

Come and see the world’s largest collection of steam engines and organs, hear Robert Wolfe one of the world’s leading theatre organists play the mighty Wurlitzer at 12.30pm and 2pm daily, ride on fairground carousels and the gondola, enjoy “Back Stage Tours” and watch silent movies.

Magnificent Steam Machines
Come and explore the country’s finest collection of steam traction engines and get up close and personal with these magnificent machines of yesteryear. Steam power on the land, the roads, and eventually on the fairground did not have a very long life. From the middle of the last century until the First World War it enjoyed its heyday, developing superlative engineering skills and techniques which are still admired today. But by the 1920’s, steam was faltering before the challenge of diesel and petrol engines. By the 1940s steam vehicles were heading in their thousands to scrap yards.

Marvel at the Music

In 1904, when the founder of Thursford Collection, George. T.H. Cushing MBE was born, the visiting fair was an irresistible draw to every village across the land. George was taken to the fair when he was just eight years old which filled him with sights and sounds he was never able to forget, and ultimately his passion for creating the Thursford Collection. It was the amazing sounds of the fairground organs that had a particularly magical effect. It’s just the same effect we see on visitors to Thursford today when they see and hear the wonderful sound of George’s amazing collection of fairground organs.

Lunch in the barn and shop in our ‘Olde Worlde’ shopping village. All this and our fantastic play area has plenty to delight children of all ages.

Newmarket Stud & Heritage Centre Tour – Sunday 3rd May 2020 – Coach trip from Norwich

The National Stud opened its gates to the public for the first time in the mid 1970s. To this day The National Stud remains the only commercial stud farm in the UK allowing individuals, small groups and large parties the chance to see behind the scenes of a working Thoroughbred stud farm.

Tours of The National Stud last approximately 90 minutes and are taken by coach and on foot. The tours explore this beautiful 500-acre site and focus on introducing visitors to the history and purpose of The National Stud as a commercial Thoroughbred breeding operation. The National Stud is a working commercial stud farm, so the physical content of the tours varies throughout the year, depending on the season and the activities happening on the stud when you visit.  There is then an opportunity for lunch, following which we visit the National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art.

This is situated in Charles II’s sporting palace and stables and spans five acres in the heart of Newmarket. It comprises three complementary attractions; a new National Horseracing Museum, a National Art Gallery of British Sporting Art, and a chance to meet former racehorses and learn what they do after racing, in the flagship home of Retraining of Racehorses.  Part of the visit is a guided tour followed by free time to browse.

The National Heritage Centre at Palace House is the result of over ten years planning, building and fundraising to become the biggest new attraction to open in Suffolk in the last decade. Voted Suffolk Museum of the year 2017.

The Heritage Centre also features The Tack Room: Food by the Pantry. It is accessible to all the public, not just Heritage Centre ticket holders, and can be accessed via large gates on Palace Street directly into the King’s Yard or from the atrium that runs from Rous Road car park through to Palace Street.

Retraining of Racehorses demonstrations take place daily in the arena at 11.30 and 14.30 daily.

London Postal Museum & Lunch – Coach trip from Norwich – Thursday 21st May 2020

Following our 2 sell-out trips last year, another chance to enjoy this day out gives you entrance to the newly opened Postal Museum in London which includes a two course lunch before the tour.

The museum’s galleries will take you on a journey through five-centuries of world-class curiosities, providing a different, previously unseen view on some of the world’s most significant historical events, and an insight into the quirky beginnings of the earliest social network.

Once you have explored the museum, your ticket will then grant you access to a subterranean world that – up until now – remained hidden from public view.

Descend into the old engineering depot of Mail Rail – the one-hundred-year old little-known Post Office railway – and board a miniature train designed to transport people through its narrow tunnels for the first time. The train ride will pass through and stop at the original Mount Pleasant station platforms 70 feet underground, where an impressive audio visual display will take riders back in time, giving an insight into the heyday of the railway.

Day to Greenwich + The Painted Hall, National Maritime Museum – with optional Cutty Sark – Thursday 23rd July 2020

Greenwich is where hemispheres meet and royal heritage combines with contemporary architecture. Our day includes a 2-course lunch in Greenwich followed by a tour of the Painted Hall.   You then have free time to include the National Maritime Museum (free entry)  and you can add an optional visit to the Cutty Sark.

Painted Hall

Known as Britain’s Sistine Chapel, the Painted Hall is a spectacular 18th century masterpiece of baroque art.
Discover one of London’s hidden gems, the magnificent Painted Hall, in the heart of the Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage site. Known as ‘Britain’s Sistine
Chapel’, Sir James Thornhill’s magnificent Painted Hall is an epic baroque masterpiece. Hear the intriguing history of this iconic site and walk in the footsteps of Tudor monarchs. View the foundations  of the former Greenwich Palace, birthplace of the notorious King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I, plus the room where Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson lay in state after
the Battle of Trafalgar, all part of your Painted Hall visit.

Explore Sir Christopher Wren’s stunning buildings and wander the extensive riverside grounds. Painted Hall tickets include entry to the Chapel and the Skittle Alley where you can try your hand at Victorian bowling. Multimedia guides, talks and tours also included.

Cutty Sark

You can get a real sensation of what it must have been like to go to sea in the great age of sail when you step aboard the fabulous Cutty Sark.

She’s the very last remaining Tea Clipper and, in her day, was one of the fastest ships on the all-important tea runs from China. If you stand at the prow you can imagine yourself thundering around the Cape of Good Hope on the way from Shanghai to London. During the middle years of the 19th century, clipper ships would compete with each other to see who could get the first crop of fresh tea back to the UK and Cutty Sark was one of them.

The ship has been in Greenwich since 1954 and went through a period of careful conservation between 2007 and 2012 during which a fire broke out on board. The fire looked shocking but didn’t do as much damage as had been feared because all the rigging and deck furniture had already been taken away for renewal. She has been raised three meters which means you can walk underneath her sparkling hull – you should definitely go and visit!

Highclere Castle is not only a beautiful building, but a warm and welcoming home. Playing host to family and friends, but also to events and celebrations with visitors and guests from around the world.

Stanta – Battle Training Ground – Thetford – Wednesday 9th September 2020 – Coach trip from Norwich – SOLD OUT

Many will have seen the red & white 'STANTA' signs near Thetford.  But what is it.......??

Stanford Training Area (STANTA), originally known as Stanford Battle Area, is a British Army training area situated in the English county of Norfolk. The area is approximately 30,000 acres (120 km2) in size; it is some 7 miles (11 km) north of the town of Thetford and 25 miles (40 km) south-west of the city of Norwich. The site is run by the Operational Training and Advisory Group (OPTAG).

The area was originally established in 1942 when a battle training area was required and a 'Nazi village' established. Military exercises were already known in the area; tanks had deployed to Thetford in the First World War. The complete takeover involved the evacuation of the villages of Buckenham Tofts, Langford, Stanford, Sturston, Tottington and West Tofts.

The area was used during the run-up to the D-Day invasion and since then has hosted many exercises. A regular visitor is 16 Air Assault Brigade who hold their annual Gryphon exercises there. It is also used by cadets to complete Fieldcraft exercises.

In 2009 a 12.5-acre (51,000 m2) village designed to replicate its Afghan equivalent, was added to the Battle Area for the training of troops deployed in support of the War in Afghanistan. The site, built at a cost of £14 million, is state of the art and manned by Afghan nationals, ex-Gurkha soldiers and amputee actors, who simulate the Afghan National Army, locals and wounded soldiers.  The village includes houses, a market and a mosque.
