Vintage Essex – A Full Board Day Out! with Lunch & Afternoon Tea – Thursday 1st July 2021 – Coach trip from Norwich
Vintage Essex
Our Vintage Essex day is for those who like to see a lot without walking too far!
We arrive in Thaxted, Queen of Essex at 10.30am for morning refreshments in an old coaching inn. Betjeman said Thaxted was about as good as it gets.
We’ll visit the old wool church where English composer Gustav Holst played the organ and the vicar flew the Red Flag from the tower. Who’s for a few verses of Holst’s hymn Thaxted, better known as I Vow To Thee My Country? From the church we weave past black and white striped Tudor houses and jolly colour-washed homes from the mediaeval to the Georgian period to the beautifully wonky old Guildhall.
From high in the coach we’ll take in the gently rolling landscapes of rural Essex and the chocolate box village of Finchingfield as we head south to the little known Essex Rodings. Eight villages full of old thatched cottages, timber-framed manor houses and farmhouses form the largest group in the country to share a common name. The Rodings name comes from the Anglo-Saxon Hrodingas who sailed up the River Thames 1500 years ago, turned right at Barking Creek and kept going until they found this remote and fertile landscape.
A ploughman’s lunch is ready for us at the Lodge Garage in High Easter, served to you by ladies who dress up to get into the vintage spirit. We are surrounded by the vintage vehicle collection and old coaching ephemera collection of the Lodge Family have just marked their centenary in the coaching business.
It’s a lovely afternoon with time to enjoy the collection of old coaching and bus ephemera and rides out in immaculately restored 1940s and 1950s coaches that have starred in Only Fools spin off Rock & Chips and blockbuster series The Crown. We finish the day with tea & cake, which is also included in the cost.
£65 including:
- Coach travel to Thaxted
- Morning Coffee with Biscuits
- Ploughman’s Lunch with hot drink
- Afternoon tea with cake
- Blue Badge Tour Guide
- The JW Lodge & Sons Nostalgia Collection
- Two rides on vintage coaches

British Motor Museum – Warwick – Thursday 14th October 2021 – Coach Travel from Norwich
British Motor Museum
The British Motor Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of historic British Cars; it boasts nearly 300 cars in its collection which span the classic, vintage and veteran eras.
Situated in the small village of Gaydon, Warwickshire, just off junction 12 of the M40. The Museum building is a spectacular piece of architecture with an art deco design, whilst the Collections Centre building is a modern contrast. Together they stand proudly in a beautifully landscaped setting of 65 acres, which rolls out onto the Warwickshire countryside.
The Museum opened in 1993 as the amalgamation of the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust’s preserved car collection.
The Trust decided that the car collection and artefacts were outgrowing its then two locations, Studley in Warwickshire and a museum in Syon Park in London. A dedicated purpose-built residence was needed to give the collection pride of place and open for public viewing.
It was the Trust’s mission to keep the memory of the British motor industry alive and to tell its story to all, starting from the beginning of the 20th Century to present day. So a building was designed that not only housed the cars and its extensive motoring archive, but also had educational and conference facilities thus ensuring its sustainability. The Heritage Motor Centre, as it was first known, opened in May 1993.
In the winter of 2015 the Museum underwent a further £1.1million refurbishment, dramatically changing the layout of the exhibitions with fresh and interactive interpretation. With its recent Designated Status and new look Museum, the Trust took the opportunity to change the Museums name from the Heritage Motor Centre to something that more accurately portrays the visitor experience as well as its position and status.
– so the British Motor Museum was born.
