Following our very popular visit in 2018 we return again to Layer Marney Tower near Colchester. Begin this fantastic, festive day by arriving at the stunning Layer Marney Tower, a Tudor Palace built to impress Henry VIII. When you have settled and admired the surroundings, you will be served coffee in the magnificent Corsellis Room. After coffee your guide will meet you and take you on a guided tour of the Palace and Tower* visiting rooms not normally open to visitors, for this is a family home decorated for a family Christmas, with sparkling lights and towering trees, candles and log fires. Your guide will tell you tales from Tudor times to the present day, giving you a little background history as well as some family secrets.
After your tour, you will sit down and enjoy a festive, three-course lunch in the beautiful Long Gallery. The Long Gallery is a light and airy room, with large picture windows looking out onto the gardens and beyond to the Blackwater estuary. Once you’re full of festive food, step outside and walk over to the Church where you will be able to enjoy a performance of The Tale Of Gloucester. St Mary the Virgin Church was rebuilt in the early 16th Century and is still used as the Parish Church. Relax and enjoy the performance and carols being sung by professional actors and singers and take in the Christmas atmosphere. After the concert, you will be able to walk through the house to the Corsellis Room in a different part of the tower where mulled wine and mince pies will be served.
* Please note, not all the tower is wheelchair accessible
